About The Franklin Terrace

Stepping onto the screened veranda of the Franklin Terrace is a Welsian journey back in time. Although there is only a screen separating you from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a small town, you will be transported to another era, when Southern hospitality was a lifestyle and the only bustling you would find in the household was the hostess seeing to the comfort of her quests.

This historic old inn was built in 1887 as a school, but was opened as the Franklin Terrace in 1915. Completely redecorated with Front Entrace period antiques and accoutrements, its quiet dignity is a reminder of days when tourists fled the sweltering summers of the lowlands to spend their days playing lawn tennis and croquet, exploring nature or just quietly sitting.

Franklin, which sits on a hill above the Little Tennessee River and is surrounded by peaks of the Cowee, Fishhawk, and Nantahala Mountain ranges, has much to offer any visitor. From the peaceful beauty of Dry Falls to the grandeur of Wayah Bald, nature can be experienced at its best. And within walking distance of the Inn are quaint shops and specialty stores for the treasure hunters, and, for the history buff, hours of entertainment in the Gem and Mineral Museum, the Scottish Tartans Museum, and the Macon county Historical Museum. Our artists and Flowers abound in our backyard. craftsmen are world famous for the quality and originality of their works, many of which can be seen first-hand in the Inn.

After a good night's rest, guests are treated to a breakfast that includes the specialty of the house, which is an English muffin with sausage and cheese plus a poached egg on top of it, if you prefer. Many types of fruit, melons, cereals, fresh baked muffins, and croissants. Home made breads such as Banana Nut, lemon, pumpkin and plenty of home-made jellies and jams and other delicacies. You can greet the morning sun in the beautiful, window-lined dining room, with views of the courtyard flower garden, alive with birds and butterflies, and complete with fountains. If you listen carefully, you can almost hear the swish of crinoline. Come experience it yourself, while the era still lives.
